He is the  son of Peter Hood Ballantine Frelinghuysen II, great-great grandson of  Frederick Frelinghuysen, and great-great-great nephew of Theodore  Frelinghuysen, who each represented New Jersey in Congress. After  graduating from Hobart College in 1969, Frelinghuysen served in the  United States Army until 1971. After his military service, Frelinghuysen  worked for the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders until he was  elected to serve as a freeholder in 1974.
In 1983, Frelinghuysen stepped down from his seat as a freeholder to  take a seat in the New Jersey General Assembly (the lower house of the  New Jersey Legislature), a position he would hold until elected to the  U.S. House of Representatives in 1994.
Rodney Frelinghuysen, representing New Jersey's 11th District, will hold  a “Town Meeting” at the Mount Olive Middle School (located on Wolfe  Road, Budd Lake) in the auditorium on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 at  9am. The meeting will be an opportunity for Congressman Frelinghuysen to  discuss the key issues he is working on in Congress, while also giving  attendees a chance to address their individual concerns.
