Court records show Joan Barnett pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in the case this fall. She was fired from her job as a parent coordinator at the Manhattan High School of Hospitality Management.

Weirdest Things Eaten By Human, We’ve all lost pens down the back of a sofa but one woman managed to misplace one for 25 years – after she swallowed it by accident.The surprising find only came to light after the 76-year-old woman visited her doctor suffering from weight loss and diarrhoea.

An urgent investigation revealed areas of the woman’s large intestine had become inflamed, which was causing the abdominal pain.

Doctors at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital Foundation Trust then took a CT scan of her abdomen where they were amazed to find a ‘linear object’ that looked much like a pen.

When questioned, the patient remembered that 25 years before she had used a felt-tip pen to poke her tonsils while looking at them in a mirror. However, she had then fallen forward off a step and swallowed the pen by accident.

Her husband and GP had dismissed her story at the time after plain abdominal X-rays came up normal.

The doctors performed a gastroscopy, which confirmed there was a plastic felt-tip pen sitting in the lumen of the woman’s stomach.

It hadn’t caused her any gastric damage – indeed the symptoms that had prompted the investigation in the first place had resolved themselves.

The medical team her decided that they should remove the pen as there was a small risk it could perforate her stomach lining.

Pen Stomach 25 Years Still Works, A 76-year-old British woman recently had a pen removed from her stomach, and doctors were shocked to discover that after 25 years of gestation the pen still works.The British Medical Journal Case Reports chronicled the medical case of the woman, who has not been identified, was sent to a GI specialist after various symptoms, including weight loss. When doctors scanned the woman's intestinal tract, they discovered, "A linear foreign body in the stomach." After the discovery, the woman said she remembered accidentally swallowing a black felt-tip pen, more than a quarter century ago.

While the pen was corroded after two decades of exposure to stomach acid, it still contained usable ink and could be used for writing.

While she was interrogating a spot on her tonsil with the pen she slipped, fell and swallowed the pen by mistake. Her husband and general practitioner dismissed her story and plain abdominal films done at the time were reported as normal. A gastroscopy demonstrated a plastic felt-tip pen sitting in the lumen of the stomach without evidence of any gastric damage.

Even though the pen was apparently not related to the woman's current health issues, doctors went ahead and removed it anyway. In perhaps a bit of dry humor, Dr. Waters concluded in his report:

Extension Payroll Tax Cut Passes Senate, The Senate on Saturday approved a two-month extension of a payroll tax cut and a $1 trillion bill to fund the government, resolving the latest in a year-long series of tense political stand-offs but setting up fresh battles for 2012.Democrats and Republicans were unable to agree on how to pay for a full-year extension of the tax cut and long-term unemployment benefits, as President Barack Obama requested. So senators settled, by a vote of 89-10, for a short-term measure that sets up a debate early next year - just as presidential and congressional election campaigns kick into high gear.

"It would be inexcusable for Congress not to further extend this middle class tax cut for the rest of the year," Obama said at the White House shortly after the Senate passed the bill. Senators then left town, to return for business on January 23.

The payroll tax cut bill keeps the 4.2 percent tax rate from jumping to 6.2 percent for 160 million workers on January 1.

Economists have warned that a failure to keep the workers' tax cut in place next year would hurt a U.S. recovery already exposed to troubles in debt-stricken Europe. Some said it could lop as much as 1 percentage point off economic growth.

While it is far too early to know how Congress would address the issue in two months, it will be politically difficult for Congress to allow workers to be hit with a 2 percent payroll tax increase with elections approaching.

But first the House must address the Senate's two-month extension bill. A House Republican aide said leaders spoke by telephone with rank-and-file members and a few options were discussed. Those include accepting the Senate bill or amending it and sending it back to the Senate.

While no decision was made, the aide said members were "overwhelmingly disappointed in the Senate's decision to just kick the can down the road for two months."

The $33 billion cost of the two-month extension would be covered by increasing fees government-controlled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac charge lenders to guarantee mortgages. A full-year extension would have cost about $200 billion.

The fees on new mortgage customers would be permanently increased by 10 basis points under the legislation.

AVOIDING A SHUT-DOWN
In a year that saw relentlessly partisan fights over budget, tax and debt legislation, the struggle over the payroll tax cut and jobless benefits measure was a final bruising battle that could set the tone for 2012.

This year, difficulties crossing the partisan divide brought the government to the brink of shutting down three times, pushed it close to a debt default and cost the nation its prized triple-A credit rating.

The $915 billion spending bill that cleared the Senate 67-32 ensures the government will keep running through next September. Obama signed it into law late on Saturday.

It raises funding for the Defense Department but cuts into budgets at the Environmental Protection Agency, education and health departments and other federal activities.

Congress worked up to the wire to finish the legislation, as agency funds were running out this weekend and federal workers faced layoffs.

It has been such a tough year that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid turned to history to try to put it into perspective.

Reid recounted the 1856 beating in the Senate chamber of a Massachusetts senator by a member of the House. "The times that we are going through here are not unusual for the United States Senate," Reid said. "In fact they're very peaceful and calm compared to some times."

KEYSTONE PIPELINE FIGHT
Republicans used the tax bill to push for quick U.S. approval of TransCanada Corp's Keystone XL pipeline project, which is backed by labor unions but opposed by environmental groups.

The legislation requires Obama to approve construction of the pipeline from Canada to U.S. Gulf of Mexico facilities within 60 days or declare it is not in the national interest. Obama wanted to take a year, beyond November's elections, to review the project.

Republicans argued the pipeline would create jobs at a time the nation is suffering from an 8.6 percent unemployment rate.

"The president says he wakes up every morning thinking about jobs. This morning, the Senate took action where the president has punted," said Republican Senator John Cornyn.

Democratic Senator Charles Schumer characterized his party's concession on Keystone as giving Republicans "the sleeves off a vest" since the State Department already has said it would withhold approval if forced to fast-track a decision.

An Obama administration official who briefed reporters said the State Department would "almost certainly" have to turn down the approval because there would not be enough time to complete its environmental review.

HIGHER MORTGAGE FEES
The decision to pay for the continued tax cut and jobless benefits with the guarantee fees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac charge will drive up mortgage costs for homebuyers.

For example, the cost of a $220,000 mortgage would go up by about $15 per month, according to Obama administration calculations.

The administration had proposed raising the fees as a way to slash the federal budget deficit and reduce the government's role in the housing market, where it now finances about nine in 10 new mortgages. An administration official said gradually increasing the fees would encourage more private financing.

Conjoined Twins Separated Chile, Hour stretching past hour, Jessica Navarrete and her husband kept an anxious vigil early Wednesday while doctors tried to separate their conjoined twin daughters.The marathon surgery that began Tuesday was the seventh operation for the 10-month-old girls, and the most complex yet — with doctors working to separate them at the thorax, stomach and pelvis. On Tuesday morning, Navarrete and her husband, Roberto Paredes, hugged in the doorway of the surgery ward, after kissing their twin babies Maria Paz and Maria Jose.

"Sadness, a lot of sadness," Navarrete said as the operation got under way at the Luis Calvo Mackenna Hospital in the capital of Santiago. "Because one as any mother feels fear, but (I have) faith that everything will turn out well and I'm going to see them separated, because this is my dream.
"A miracle from God is what I'm waiting for."

The twins had lost a lot of blood by Tuesday night, but Navarrete and Paredes had issued a call early in the day for the public to donate blood and doctors said later that they had enough to ease the bleeding problem.

By midnight (0300 GMT), the twins were two-thirds separated.

"We had to completely separate the chest, and now we are starting the final separation stage of the abdomen and pelvic region," Francisco Ossandon, head of the surgical team, told reporters.

"So far, things have gone according to form. We have had difficult times, particularly bleeding, but they have been dealt with successfully," he said.

The operation was expected to last until 4 a.m. (0700 GMT) Wednesday, for a total of 20 hours.

"They have come out of adverse situations before, and if they have come out from that, how are they going to fall behind now?" Paredes asked.

Perhaps providing some comfort to the parents was the hospital's history with conjoined twins. Staff there have separated three sets before. A fourth set, however, died during surgery due to cardiac complications.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, one out of every 200,000 live births worldwide results in conjoined twins. About 35 percent survive only one day, while the overall survival rate is 5 percent to 25 percent.

The Chilean twins presented a particularly difficult challenge to doctors because they were born sharing many of the same internal organs and even urinary system.

Hospital director Osvaldo Artaza said the risks of their operation couldn't be minimized.

"It's a reality and it's necessary to be super-transparent in warning that one or two girls could die," Artaza said. "But the team ... has committed itself with conviction to try to save the two."

He was more upbeat around midnight. "The vitality and resilience of the girls has given us momentum and given us strength to continue with what lies ahead," he told reporters.

Before the procedure started, Ossandon described the twins' case as the "most complex that has been born in Chile."

"Never have we faced such a high risk," Ossandon said. "We don't have another option from the perspective of the quality of life and the expectations for life of Maria Jose and Maria Paz."

Earlier this year, doctors separated the twins' legs, urinary tracts, pulmonary systems and other parts of their bodies.

Navarrete said it wasn't any easier to wait through the latest operation.

If the twins live through the separating procedure, each of them would then have to be sewed shut. About 100 people participated in the procedure, including 25 surgeons and anesthesiologists.

The twins were born in the Villarrica hospital about 470 miles (760 kilometers) from Santiago and were kept under constant medical care, surviving with the aid of an artificial respirator.
